People Eating Tasty Animals is a website hosted by Mike Doughney, that
parodies the
animal rights organization PETA (
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). The site originally was hosted at the 'peta.org' domain name. As a result, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sued Mr. Doughney, and the resulting case (
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals v. Doughney, 2001) is considered a relevant case for understanding the legal definition of
cybersquatting.
While the name is not used by any formal organization, opponents of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have used it.
Domain name dispute
Mike Doughney registered the domain name "peta.org" in 1996. In 2001, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sued Mr. Doughney, alleging
unfair competition and violations of the
Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act. He was forced to surrender the domain name to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the site is now located on a personal web page.
