New York State Route 331 (NY 331) is a short state highway in the U.S. state of New York. The route begins at a junction with County Route 57 south of Crum Creek in the Montgomery County town of St. Johnsville and ends at NY 29 in the Oppenheim hamlet of the same name. It is a two-lane highway its entire length. The southernmost stretch is steep and windy.

Route description

Route 331 begins just south of the Montgomery-Fulton county line at an intersection with County Route 57 in the town of St. Johnsville. The highway heads northward and enters Fulton County, where it intersects with CR 108. Route 331 begins to head up Twin Church Hill. As the highway heads farther, it intersects with another county road, CR 150. Route 331 enters the hamlet of Oppenheim and terminates at an intersection with NY 29.

History

NY 331, when assigned in the early to mid-1930s, originally started at NY 5 near the village of St. Johnsville and followed Hillabrandt and Kennedy Roads between NY 5 and Crum Creek Road. By 1947, the route was realigned slightly along this segment to follow Kennedy Road to its junction with NY 5. NY 331 was rerouted again in the 1950s to enter St. Johnsville by way of Crum Creek Road and North Division Street. It was truncated to its current southern terminus at Crum Creek Road in the 1960s.

The original alignment of NY 331 south of Crum Creek Road remains intact as a town-maintained road, but has not been modernized. The 1950s and 1960s alignment of NY 331 into St. Johnsville, as well as the short piece of current NY 331 in Montgomery County, is currently designated as County Route 57 and maintained by Montgomery County.
