In England until the 17th Century, this day, Lady Day or the feast of the Annunciation, is accounted the first day of the year and hence New Year's Day. The usage still lingers in the dating of the financial year of the government and other bodies to April 6th – March 25th as modified by the change from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar.
