The
Krimulda Castle ruins are located in
Sigulda town,
Riga District,
Latvia and is a major tourist attraction. The castle dates from the 14th century and was destroyed in a war in 1601.
History
The castle's ruins stand near a
dell of a small river, Vikmeste. The castle was built before
1312 and until
1566 it belonged to a
Riga chapter of priests. The wide yard was encircled by 1.5 meter thick stone walls. The castle was destroyed during war between
Poles and Sweeds in
1601. Since 17th. century castle is in bad condition. Today you can actually see only some walls. The castle ruins are surrounded by forest.
The castle ruins contrast with the "new" 19th century
Sigulda Castle and
Sigulda Church. The
Gauja National Park, hilly riverbanks, and sandstone caves are located nearby in the resort area popular for tourism and winter sports.
