Kentucky County was formed by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1776 by dividing Fincastle County into three new counties: Kentucky, Washington, and Montgomery. Four years later Kentucky County was divided into the Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln counties of Virginia.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky was formed from the former territory of Kentucky County and was admitted to the United States as its fifteenth state in 1792.
