Harper’s Bazaar, a monthly fashion magazine published by the
Hearst Corporation. She was appointed to this position in May 2001. Before joining Harper's Bazaar, she served as the editor-in-chief at the U.S. edition of
Marie Claire starting in June 1996.
Bailey has also served as the Editor of British Marie Claire, which she launched in 1988.
British Marie Claire earned Bailey three Magazine Editor of the Year Awards, five Magazine of the Year Awards and two Amnesty International Awards. In August 1995, she was named as International Editorial Consultant for all 26 editions of
Marie Claire.
Ms Bailey was born in
Derbyshire,
England. She earned a degree in fashion design from
Kingston University. Before establishing herself in publishing, Bailey produced a collection for
Guisi Slaverio in
Italy in 1983.
She also served as editor of
Honey in 1986. She launched
FOLIO, a quarterly fashion magazine, before being appointed as launch editor of
British Marie Claire.
She was appointed
Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the
2008 New Year Honours.
Ms Bailey's award was recognised by the British Consul General, Sir Alan Collins, on 6 May 2008 at a party at his Manhattan Residence. Fashion writers said they had never encountered as many designers at this kind of party in the modern history of New York. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair sent a video message expressing Britain's pride in Ms Bailey's achievements.
Personal Life
Ms Bailey has been happily partnered with the noted British artist Stephen Sumner for more than thirty years. She retains family connections in Derbyshire but lives in Manhattan.
