"
Crazy for You" is a single by American singer-songwriter
Madonna for the 1985 film
Vision Quest. It also appears remixed on the 1990 compilation album
The Immaculate Collection and was re-released on February 24, 1991 by
Sire Records to promote the album. In late 1995, it was included on the ballads compilation
Something to Remember.
Song information
Upon its original release, the single was backed with
Berlin's song, "No More Words", which had already been a top 30 hit in the United States (as an A-side) in 1985, as well as a minor hit in Europe. At the time, Berlin was signed to
Geffen Records, who released both the single and the
Vision Quest soundtrack.
This was the first of Madonna's UK singles to be released as a shaped picture disc featuring her in a white lace bustier. Madonna performed this song on her
Virgin Tour.
In February 1991, the song was re-released with a different cover in the United Kingdom having been included on
The Immaculate Collection. Like the rest of the recordings on that compilation, "Crazy For You" was slightly remixed and edited (in this case by
Shep Pettibone and Michael Hutchinson). It was this new remix that was released in the UK. The cover of the re-released single was the same photo used on the cover of the U.S. release of "
Rescue Me". The cover photograph is from the photoshoot of Madonna's controversial 1990 music video for "
Justify My Love", and was taken by
Stephane Sednaoui.
The song was ranked number 38 on
VH1's "100 Greatest Love Songs", and during the special it was revealed that "Crazy for You" was recorded in one take.
In 2003, Madonna fans were asked to vote for their Top 20 Madonna singles of all-time by
Q-Magazine. "Crazy for You" was allocated the #11 spot.
Chart performance
"Crazy for You" became Madonna's second number-one hit single on the
Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. It was certified Gold by the
RIAA on July 16th 1985, recognizing one million units sold.
1 The song also was a huge hit in many European countries and reached number one in Australia and Japan. "Crazy for You" displaced another Madonna release, "
Angel"/"
Into the Groove", from the top spot on the Australian chart, making Madonna one of only a handful of acts who have ever replaced themselves at the No.1 spot on the Australian singles chart.
When it was re-released in the UK in 1991, the song entered the chart at number two for two weeks, having previously also peaked at number two on its 1985 release. Combined sales equal 662,481 making it Madonna's fourth best selling single in the UK to date. It was the 15th best-selling single of 1985 in the UK.
