Alliant International University is a private, not-for-profit institution of higher education based in California. Alliant was formed in 2001 by the combination of two older institutions: the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) and United States International University (USIU).
Alliant is made up of four schools:
The California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) was founded in 1969 under the auspices of the California Psychological Association. CSPP was the first free-standing school of professional psychology in the nation, and remains the largest non-profit professional psychology school in the nation. CSPP offers programs in Clinical Psychology and Marital and Family Therapy. The Marshall Goldsmith School of Management, named for one of the world’s leading organizational consultants and executive coaches, offers degrees in Business, International Business, Organizational Psychology, Consulting Psychology and International Relations. The Shirley M. Hufstedler School of Education, named for the first US Secretary of Education, offers programs in Teaching, School Psychology, Educational Leadership and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The California School of Forensic Studies offers programs in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice. The Presidio School of Management, which offers programs in sustainable management, is affiliated with Alliant International University.
Alliant serves approximately 4,000 students. It offers degree programs in six California cities (San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Irvine, Sacramento and Fresno) and in three international locations (Mexico City, Tokyo and Hong Kong).
All Alliant programs are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Alliant’s clinical psychology programs are accredited by the American Psychological Association. Its Marital and Family Therapy programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education. Its teacher credentialing programs are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Alliant has been recognized by Hispanic Outlook Magazine as among the top 10 institutions awarding doctorate degrees to Hispanic students. Diverse magazine reports that in 2006 and 2007 Alliant awarded more doctoral degrees in psychology to minority students than any other US university.
USIU
General
As the name implied, United States International University named because it made a special effort to recruit students from around the world.
In the early 1980s, USIU held a broadcast license to operate
KUSI, a startup
UHF television station in San Diego. But for unknown reasons, USIU decided not to launch the channel. The license was transferred to Texas businessman Mike McKinnon and it began as a commercial station in
1982. KUSI still exists as an
independent station. USIU developed a network of campuses throughout the world at locations such as
Guam,
England,
Kenya, and
Mexico City. The Mexico City campus remains part of the Alliant International University system, however shortly after the merger with CSPP, the Kenya campus became its own independent entity known as United States International University - Africa.
Alumni of USIU include
Jamie Foxx and
Dante (comedian)Athletics
USIU once had an athletics program which was a member of
NCAA Division I. Sports sponsored included
basketball,
baseball,
soccer,
cross country,
track and field,
tennis, and
volleyball. There was also a
football program that produced a late-round draft pick by a
National Football League team, but it was eventually discontinued. At one time, USIU also had the only Division I
ice hockey program west of the
Rocky Mountains.
In
January 1989, USIU lost a basketball game to
Loyola Marymount 186-150. The 186 points remains a Division I record for most points allowed in a single contest.
Kevin Bradshaw paced the Gulls with 72 points.
Due to continued expenses and a growing focus on post-graduate education, USIU ended its basketball program just before the merger. The baseball and hockey programs had already been abolished by this time. The remaining programs were shut down in 2007.
