Adnan () is the traditional ancestor of the Adnani Arabs of northern, central and western Arabia, as opposed to the Qahtani of Southern and south eastern Arabia who descend from Qahtan. Adnan is a descendant of Ishmael (Ismail) through his son Nebaioth (Nabit). His descendants includes the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

Origin

Originally from Babylon in southern Iraq, they are descendants of Ishmael (Ismail), the son of Abraham (Ibrahim) who was from Ur Kaśdim, Mesopotamia. Babylonians are descendants of Akkadians, who are descendants of Shem (Sam), the son of Noah (Nuh) from Iraq. According to the Hebrew Bible and the genealogies of Genesis, Noah was a ninth generation descendant of Adam (آدم), however no Islamic sources mentions this. Adam and Eve were sent down from Heaven by God to the Garden of Eden, which is, according to some accounts, located in Al-Qurnah near Basra in Iraq.

Adnanite Arabs are described, by some genealogists and Qahtanites, as "Arabized" Arabs.

Muhammed said that Ishmael, the first person to speak the plain Arabic language, was the father of the Northern Arabs. This has also been followed by Ibn Khaldun, many genealogists and scholars.
